Portugal 2-2 England ( 24th June 2004 Euro 2004 Quarter final match)
England were really unlucky to go out on penalties, however Portugal were well organized and played talented football. England could not have got off to a better start as Michael Owen put England in front after just 3 minutes. This made Owen the first Englishman to score in 4 consecutive tournaments. Wayne Rooney was forced off injured mid way through the first half and Darius Vassel replaced him. England controlled the Portuguese attacks with a great defensive display’s by Gary Neville, John Terry, Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell. England were certainly holding its own through the match. Figo came off mid way through the second half and he introduced Rui Costa and Simao. With ten minutes remaining Postiga headed the ball into the net for Portugal from six yards out. With few minutes remaining, Campbell thought he won it for England with a header, however his goal was ruled out. England forced the match in to extra time and Rui Costa hit a beauty from 20 yards out to put Portugal 2-1 in front. With only five minutes left in extra time, Frank Lampard equalized for England. Portugal ended up winning on penalties 6-5, with Ricardo being the hero.
England 3-2 Argentina (13th November 2005 – Friendly match)
A thrilling friendly contest between Argentina and England was certainly exciting, with Argentina taking the lead early on, England put on an onslaught, Wayne Rooney equalized for England shortly after, however Argentina took a commanding 2-1 lead. When Joe Cole came on after an hour the match changed completely and England played some great attacking football. Owen scored two very late goals to win the football tie 3-2 to England and they buried their South American counterparts. |
