Adam’s was an integral part of the England squad during the 1988 football European championships. He scored for England in their final Euro 88 match against USSR; however they bowed out at the first hurdle. Adams was left out of the England squad for the 1990 world cup finals and missed Euro 92 suffering from an injury. Adams really became a force in the England set up prior to Euro 96; he was briefly installed as captain and made some excellent displays during Euro 96. He was a key member of England’s starting line up during the 1998 world cup finals in France and also featured for England in Euro 2000. His England football international career spanned for nearly 14 years. In total he made 668 appearances for Arsenal.
Steve Mcmanaman

Mcmanaman was a key member for England during the late 1990’s; he had a free role during his great performances of Euro 96. He played in all five of England’s matches during the European football championships of 1996 and came close to scoring a late winner against Germany in the semi finals. He played in most of England’s qualifying matches for the 1998 world cup finals. He made only one appearance in the 1998 world cup against Colombia. Mcmanaman played in his third major tournament for the England national football team during Euro 2000. He scored against Portugal in a 3-2 defeat, he helped England qualify for the 2002 world cup finals, however his last match for England was in October 2001 against Greece.
Paul Ince

His excellent performances for Manchester United earned him a place in the England squad; he was part of England’s team which failed in qualifying for the 1994 world cup finals. Graham Taylor installed Paul Ince as England’s captain, in their summer tour in 1993 of USA; he made history by becoming England’s first ever black captain, in the absence of Tony Adams and David Platt. Ince played a crucial role in the England team during Euro 96, playing in four of the five matches, he was outstanding in England’s 4-1 thumping of Holland, however England only reached the semi-finals. Ince played a part in the qualification matches for the 1998 world cup finals, he was heroic during England’s 0-0 draw against Italy, injuring his head and remaining on the football pitch for the entire match. His 40th appearance for England came in England’s opening match against Tunisia. Ince also played a role in the England squad in qualification for Euro 2000; he made his final appearances for England in their 3 disappointing group matches of that respective football competition.
Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate made his league debut for Crystal Palace and became the youngest captain in the premiership at only the age of 22 years. Southgate played well during Euro 96; however he was unfortunate to miss his penalty in the shoot out in the semi finals against Germany. He was a key member of Glenn Hoddle’s squad during the 1998 world cup finals and also featured in Euro 2000. He played in few qualification matches for the 2002 world cup finals, however really became a bit part player after Euro 2000, he played in many friendliest for England between 2001- 2004, however he could not keep his first team place in the squad.
Alan Shearer

Since Shearer bursted into the international scene, he was difficult to leave out of the England starting line up. He played in England’s poor campaign during Euro 92, and was a first team member during the qualification for the 1994 world cup finals. Shearer found his best form for England during Euro 96; he scored five goals during the tournament, earning him the golden boot as top goal scorer. His finest match came against Holland, scoring twice in their 4-1 victory. He also scored another five goals for England while qualifying for the 1998 world cup finals. He scored twice in the 1998 finals, against Tunisia and Argentina, and retired from international football after Euro 2000, scoring another two goals in that tournament. |
