Poland 1-1 England (Euro 92 Qualifier - October 1991)
Arguably this was Graham Taylor's finest hour as English manager, knowing that England only need a point in Poland to qualify for Euro 92, England prepared intensely for this crucial clash which was proved to be a difficult match for England. England were coming on the back of an embarrassing 1-0 victory over a very poor Turkish football team. If Poland were to win they would be going play in the European football championships. The polish dominated the early stages of the match and were unlucky not to be rewarded a penalty early on, unsurprisingly in the 32nd minute, Poland took the lead. England realized that they had to equalize to progress to the final. David Rocastle and Andy Sinton had great chances to equalize. Gary Mabbut was in inspiring form and set up Sinton who narrowly missed. England continued to go on the attack and pressed on in search of the vital goal. Then with just 12 minutes remaining, England's captain, Gary Lineker, scored the equalizer and England were through to the European football championship finals in Sweden, one point clear of the Republic of Ireland.
England 2-2 Holland 1993 (World Cup qualifier)
This proved to be Graham Taylor’s toughest challenge as England football manager. England were looking to eradicate the disappointment of their disappointing Euro 92 campaign and were outstanding and unfortunate in this match against Holland. David Platt was installed as England's new captain and England got off to a flyer in this match. England were awarded a free kick early on in the match, and from 25 yards out John Barnes belted a great free kick into the back of the net, shortly after David Platt linked up with Paul Gascoigne and Les Ferdinand to give England a two goal caution at half time. Ferdinand came close to scoring a third for England on two occasions, however Holland fought back and were awarded a penalty kick with only moments remaining left in the match, Des Walker fouled a Dutch attacker in the penalty box. Holland converted their penalty kick and the result ended 2-2, in a match England really deserved to win. |
