Steve Bull became an instant sensation in the English football league when he signed to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1986 for a bargain of £35000. During the 1987-88 season he scored an unbelievable 52 goals for Wolves and in the following season he added another 37 league goals. Steve Bull’s tremendous play earned him a call up into the England squad at the end of the 1988-89 season, despite having played in the third tier of English football. Steve Bull came on as a substitute on his debut to score against Scotland. His finest match for England came in a world cup warm up match against Czechoslovakia, where England won 4-2 with Steve Bull scoring two goals. Hew played in four of England’s matches during the 1990 world cup finals and was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. Graham Taylor started Steve Bull in a Euro 92 friendly and qualification matches against Hungary and Poland respectively. Steve Bull is a cult hero at Wolves having spent 13 seasons playing for them. Even a stand in their football stadium is named after him, ‘the Steve Bull Stand.’

Goals – 9
Beardsley made his international debut against Egypt and scored in their 4-0 victory, however it was not until the 1986 world cup finals that he had established himself at the highest level. Beardsley scored in the second round match against Paraguay and partnered Gary Lineker up front through out the world cup. Beardsley was an integral part of England’s 1990 world cup squad, playing brilliant football, however failing to get on the score sheet at Italia 90. His best international moment arguably came in a Euro 92 qualifying match against Poland in 1990, he scored a startling goal in the last two minutes of the match securing a 2-0 victory for England.

Mark Wright
Debut – May 1984 V Wales
Caps – 45
Goals – 1
Mark Wrights amazing football skill and competitiveness as a centre half earned him the attention of England manager Bobby Robson. He made his debut at the tender age of 20 in a match against Wales. He missed out on the 1986 world cup finals suffering from injury; however he was not at his best during the 1988 European football championships, where England bowed out at the first hurdle. Having been absent in qualifying for Italia 90, Wright fought his way back into the squad, at the expense of Tony Adams. After missing the opening match against the Republic of Ireland, Wright played as a sweeper against Holland in a new style England team. In the crucial match against Egypt, Wright headed the only goal of the game to secure England’s place in the second round. As his reputation grew through the competition, he became a key figure in England’s defence. After Italia 90, Wright played in the qualification matches for Euro 92. His last appearance for England came in a match against Hungary in 1996.

Trevor Steven’s Partnership with Gary Stevens while playing for Everton earned him a call up into the national side. The partnership reformed during the 1986 world cup finals, both players started the match against Poland, which added to the extra sparkle that England were looking for to reach the next phase. Trevor Steven earned his place in the 1990 world cup finals because of his bright, intelligent performances while playing for Glasgow Rangers. Graham Taylor used Trevor Steven while qualifying for Euro 92, however after the 1990 world cup finals, Steven was not a permanent fixture in England’s national football team.

Chris Waddle
Debut – 29th March 1985 V Republic of Ireland
Caps – 62
Goals – 6
Waddle made his debut for England in March 1985 against the Republic of Ireland. Waddle always had to fight to keep his place in the side as competition for places were tight. In the 1986 world cup finals Waddle was poor during England’s first two matches. During the 1988 European Football championships, Waddle was part of England’s dismal football team as they were knocked out in the group stages. The 1990 world cup finals in Italy showed the best and worst of Waddle; he was accused of playing to deep in the early matches. His performance against Belgium and West Germany was incredible. However he missed his penalty in the penalty shoot out leaving England out of the finals. Chris Waddles last appearance for England was against Turkey in September 1991.
