England 3-0 Poland (June 1986 - world cup group match)
England were coming on the back off a disappointing 0-0 draw against a weak Morocco team and a 1-0 defeat to Portugal. They were also without injured captain Bryan Robson and the suspended Ray Wilkins, however Poland were on fine form prior to the match and England had to win to progress to the second phase. Bobby Robson made many changes by including Steve Hodge, Peter Reid and Trevor Steven in his starting line up. Lineker took the lead in the opening quarter of an hour, when he scored from a Peter Beardsley pass. He added his and England's second moments later, with excellent build up play by Gary Stevens and Trevor Steven resulted in Lineker scoring his second. With only 35 minutes on the clock gone, Lineker completed his fine first half hat- trick, heading the football from a corner kick into the back of the net. England could have added to their tremendous lead; however they ended the match with a 3-0 glorious victory, booking a place in the second phase.

England 8-0 Turkey (October 1987 – Euro 88 Qualifier)
England ran riot against turkey at Wembley. Barnes put England into the lead in the opening minute of the match, and with only a few minutes gone Gary lineker made it 2-0 to England, the Turks already looked beaten. It was Neil Webb’s full international debut for England and he put on a sparkling performance. He created three of England’s eight goals in the match. Barnes scored his second goal just before half time, as England finished the first half 4-0 ahead. The combination of a heavy pitch, driving rain and a breezy wind were sufficient in themselves to put Turkey onto the defensive, but with Lineker running riot, Turkey were fortunate to be only losing 4-0 at half time. After the interval Bryan Robson scored for England and Peter Beardsley added another, man of the match, Neil Webb scored England’s eighth goal of the match. England now only needed one point against Yugoslavia to ensure qualification to the 1988 European football championships.

England 4-2 Czechoslovakia (April 1990 - Friendly)
This was arguably one of England's greatest ever performances at Wembley, the tie was a world cup warm up match and Paul Gascoigne started for England and Lee Dixon made his full international debut. Gascoigne was brilliant in the opening ten minutes; however against the run of play, Czechoslovakia took a surprising lead in the 8th minute. England however responded immediately as Stuart Pearce scored with a fierce shot in the Czech penalty box. Gascoigne's skill was breathtaking as he easily flew past the Czech player, and he made a tremendous perfect pass to Steve Bull, who volleyed the ball into the back of the net from a Gascoigne cross and fired England into the lead. The Paul Gascoigne and Steve Bull connection worked again early on in the second half as Gascoigne sprinted past three Czech defender and crossed in the perfect ball for Steve Bull to head home. Steve Bull could have scored a hat- trick immediately after however the ball did not go in the back of the net. Czechoslovakia scored their second to make the last ten minutes much more interesting. However Paul Gascoigne continued to show his sparkling magic and scored himself to give England a fine 4-2 victory.

England 1-1 West Germany 1-1 (June 1990)
The match between England and West Germany was arguably the best match of the 1990 world cup finals. England started off in sparkling form with Gascoigne and Stuart Pearce coming close to give England an early lead. Chris waddle had a shot from the half way line hit the cross bar and England were unlucky to leave the pitch at half time with the score goalless. The German's had fortuitously taken the lead in the 59th minute when Andreas Brehme's free kick was deflected over Peter Shilton by Paul Parker. Ten minutes from time Paul Parker made amends by crossing a fine ball to Gary Lineker to equalize and force the match into extra time. Both teams hit the woodwork during the extra time period, Waddle hit the inside of the post and Linker failed to convert the rebound. David Platt also had a goal ruled out during Extra time. The match was decided on penalties. West Germany scored from their four attempts however Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce both missed for England and they were eliminated 4-3 on penalties.
