England 3-1 Argentina (1962 World cup)
The England team was built around Johnny Haynes at inside-left, in attack England had Alan Peacock, and England really found their touch after stifling 2-1 to Hungary in the previous match. England looked like world cup contenders as they comfortably beat Argentina 3-1. England were determined to win, having watched the spoiling tactics of Argentina against Bulgaria, England were prepared for their opponents and, in the event, played much better than they did against Hungary. Flowers put England into the lead in the 17th minute from the penalty spot, with three minutes of the half remaining Bobby Charlton scored for England to put England into a commanding two goal lead. In the second period Jimmy Greaves put England 3-0 up and although Argentina pulled one back, England’s chances of reaching the last eight were resurrected.
