USA 2-0 England (World cup 1950)

In group 2 of the 1950 world cup featured England, Chile, Spain and USA. England came off the back of a fine 2-0 victory over Chile and were expected to thrash USA. The United States lost 3-1 to Spain in their opening match and were expecting a worse defeat against the mighty English. England played USA on an arid, bumpy football pitch in a ramshackle stadium at Belo Horizonte. England’s side featured many footballing greats including Alf Ramsey. England cantered through the first period pinning the United States in their won penalty area, in the 37th minute of the match, against the run of play, the American took the lead. In the second half, England pressed with risen desperation, but the harder they tried the worse they fared and by the end of the match, they trailed 1-0. English fans were astonished and one of the greatest shocks in international football was witnessed.
