Going into the 1950 world cup, there was very little indication that England were going to stumble. Walter Winterbottom was their popular manager at the time and he had a team of golden players. With Bert William in goal, Alf Ramsey and Billy Wright occupying the defence and a forward line of Tom Finney, Wilf Mannion and Stanley Matthews. England went in the 1950 world cup finals as firm favourites and they arguably had the best team in the world. England won their first match in the 1950 world cup against Chile and they were severely embarrassed against the Americans in their second match, they lost the match 1-0 and when the result was broadcasted in Britain, some newspapers believed that it was a typing error and changed it to 10-1. England lost their final match of the group to Spain and went home severely embarrassed and disappointed.
